New WordPress Dashboard
Your fresh Wordpress Dashboard What to do
For now get familiar with the dashboard hover over the left hand panel in particular.
You are able to add or edit anything website related in this panel.
First steps first look down the panel to setting
Under Settings you will find, General, Writing, Reading, Discussion, Media and Permalinks
We tend to accept the defaults here except change the Site Title and Tagline from default to one that reflects your website goals. And you think people will search for, when looking.
Click save. Always after every change in the lower left of your screen.
Then below this under the settings tab again you will see Permalinks.
Permalinks are a way to change the url from default http://www.pinguisweb.com/WordPress-User-Tutorials/?p=123
to pretty links such as http://www.pinguisweb.com/WordPress-User-Tutorials/wordpress-training/
Which is alway good for search engines and users a like. Providing easy to remember urls for users.
The best option here is to switch for the wordpress default to postname
Below this is your category base and tag base. Again change these to suit your goals keeping Google in Mind always…
Save Changes in the bottom left hand of the screen, be aware that wordpress might ask you to create a file now
called the .htaccess file. This really affects your website and everything on it.
Copy and paste the code to your text editor and upload it via ftp to the root of your wordpress directory where – wp-admin, wp-content and wp-includes are situated.
Where to put your .htaccess file on server.
(Usually a drag and drop operation is all that is required).
In the next wordpress tutorial we will be dealing with the other wordpress settings under the settings tab.
